Spiti Valley road trip on a rented bike: routes, costs, permits and tips
I can’t keep track of the number of riders I have seen come back here with a pounding head and a ball that looks just fine and a body that doesn’t. The one thing they don’t tell you about a Spiti Valley bike trip. Most of the people are not broken by the road. The rate at which the altitude is gained is. Before planning your journey, explore suitable Bike & Car Rentals and choose a vehicle that matches your route and riding experience. The rate at which altitude is gained is what really matters.
Before discussing the route and rupees, this should be understood. Spiti is nestled in the lap of the mountains, sandwiched between Kinnaur and Ladakh, at an altitude of over 4000 metres. The cold desert, Tabo monastic site, a thousand years old, and the broken track leading to Batal, all of it is worth it. But only if you plan like the mountain can hurt you, and it can.
Your body’s response to the circuit you select.
Pick your route based on your lungs, not your calendar
The circuit you choose decides how your body copes.

Slow climb between Shimla and Kinnaur. Shimla, Narkanda, Reckong Peo, Nako, Tabo, then Kaza. You climb up slowly, so you have a fighting chance against Acute Mountain Sickness, which is about 450 km. away.
– The quick one is Manali over Kunzum! Manali, Atal tunnel, Gramphu, Batal, Kunzum pass at 4551 m and then Kaza. It’s around 200 km, but gets you airborne quickly. This side will only open from late May or June to October.
Disclaimer: This is what I tell every rider I plan for: Go in through Shimla, come out through Manali. Acclimatisation is done correctly on the ascent, and a day is saved on the descent. The entire loop is completed in 8-10 days.

What it actually costs
Guess the budget wrong and you’ll feel it at 12,000 feet, where an ATM is a fantasy. For a Spiti Valley road trip, plan on ₹20,000 to ₹42,000 per person. That’s on the ground, not counting how you reach your start point.
Here’s the rough split per person.
Spiti Valley bike rental prices depend on the machine. The Royal Enfield Himalayan or Classic 350 cost anywhere between ₹1200 to ₹2000 per day. The deposit amount varies from ₹5000 to ₹20000 which is refundable. Carry cash. The ATMs are sparse and often empty or inoperable in the past.Few ATMs that are often empty/powered down in Reckong Peo and Kaza.
The permit question, cleared up
This trips people up, so I’ll keep it plain.
– Indian citizens do not need an Inner Line Permit for the main Kaza circuit. You can ride the core route without one.
– Foreign nationals do need an ILP for restricted stretches like Sumdo to Kaza. You get it from the SDM office at Reckong Peo or Kaza.
– Carry several photocopies of your licence, bike registration, insurance and ID. Checkpoints come up often and they will ask.
Choosing the right rented bike in Spiti Valley
Not every bike makes it through Spiti in one piece. When you pick a rented bike in Spiti Valley, look at three things.

Rent from a reliable operator in Manali, Shimla or your starting city rather than choosing a roadside shop. If you’re travelling from Delhi before heading towards Spiti, you can explore Bike rental options in Delhi to compare available two-wheelers for your journey. Before booking, check the vehicle’s condition, rental terms, interstate travel permissions and breakdown support. When you break down in a no-network stretch, reliable backup makes all the difference.
Things I wish someone had drilled into me

– Take acclimatisation seriously. Sleep a night at Nako or Tabo before you push to Kaza. AMS doesn’t care how fit you are.
– Ride early. Try to be off the road by 4 PM. Afternoon winds, melting glacier streams and fading light make late riding a bad idea.
– Fuel is survival up here. There’s no petrol between Kaza and Manali, about 200 km of nothing. Carry a 5-litre spare can.
– Download offline maps. Signal is thin. Only BSNL and Jio work in patches, and only postpaid SIMs connect in Himachal’s tribal belt.
– Aim for the window. Mid-June to September is when the roads behave.
Spiti’s not something you finish. Ride within yourself, have cash on you, maintain your night and leave the place cleaner than you found it. If you do, the journey to Kaza is more than what any itinerary can offer.
