Understanding How Age is Calculated
Age can be measured differently depending on the culture. This calculator follows the most commonly used method, where a person’s age increases on their birthday. For example, if someone is 3 years and 11 months old, their age is counted as 3. On their next birthday, it will increase to 4. This system is widely used in Western countries.
In some cultures, the way age is counted is slightly different. Sometimes, people include the current year when calculating age. So, a person who is 20 years old might also be described as being in their 21st year of life.
In traditional Chinese culture, babies are considered 1 year old at birth, and everyone’s age goes up together on the Traditional Chinese New Year — not on their actual birthday. For example, if a baby is born just one day before the New Year, they could be considered 2 years old just two days after birth.
Why Some Age Results May Seem Confusing?
Sometimes, the months and days shown in the calculator can seem unclear — especially if the start date is at the end of a month. For example, we count 20 February to 20 March as one month.
But take this example: if you calculate from 28 February 2022 to 31 March 2022, the result can be read in two ways:

If we count 28 February to 28 March as one month, then the result is 1 month and 3 days.

If we consider both 28 February and 31 March as the end of the month, then the result is 1 month.
Both answers make sense depending on the method used. The same issue can happen with dates like 30 April to 31 May or 30 May to 30 June. This happens because the number of days in each month is not the same.
In this calculator, we use the first method — counting the exact number of days from the same date each month.
